Hoatzin

The Hoatzin is a remarkably eye-catching bird with a featherless bright blue face, red eyes, goldfish-orange breast feathers, and a spiky orange crest tipped in black. Unlike most other birds, both the male and female look exactly alike. Hoatzins live in South American swamps, mainly in the Amazon and Orinoco River basins, having branched off from other birds around 65 million years ago. They are roughly the size of a chicken, about 25.5 inches long and weigh less than 2.2 pounds. Baby Hoatzins have clawed wings and can swim, but can't fly, while adults can fly (but clumsily) between branches. Known as skunk or stink birds, Hoatzins digest leaves in a multi-chambered stomach where bacteria break down the leaves, releasing methane gas. Both parents and older siblings help raise the young. Fortunately, Hoatzins are not endangered.
